Cruises & Cruise Holidays Explained

Cruises & Cruise Holidays guide

Cruising used to be more associated with the rich and famous rather than us every-day folk but now due to package deals and more cruise websites being available more and more people are opting to take a cruise when it comes to booking a holiday. When a cruise is spoken about it brings up a picture in your mind of luxurious surroundings along with fantastic on board facilities that these days are superb, while the fact that cruising enables passengers to visit so many different places in one trip means that they are ever popular with young and old alike.

How do I Book a Cruise?

Booking a cruise is made very easy for us as there are so many cruise websites on the internet that facilitate it. Take a look at the sites we have looked at, they are all very detailed making booking a trip very simple to do.

How do I get to the Ship?

Most cruise deals include flights to where the ship sets sail from in with the package but if they don’t you will need to make sure that you book a separate flight yourself. Make sure that you allow enough time plus think about delays. The last thing you want is to miss your ship.

Do I Need a Passport?

If you are travelling abroad then naturally you will need an up to date passport. You may even require a visa depending on where your cruise is bound. Make sure you ascertain what documents you need before setting off to save any unnecessary aggravation.

Make sure your entire luggage is tagged correctly with all the detail regarding your ship, where it is bound plus any other facts necessary. When you embark on a cruise it is very different to flying as you may have to wait quite some time before you receive your luggage in your room. This is due to the fact that there are thousands of passengers on your cruise therefore logistically it is far more involved.

Think in advance and plan ahead if you can by taking a few items that will keep you going until you receive your cses, in a separate bag. For instance pack some toiletries, swimwear, camera, sun tan lotion, maybe a few items of clothing especially for young ones.

Will My Cruise have a Dress Code?

Most cruises do have a specific dress code so it is best to read the information you are given regarding what to wear. You may need evening wear or specific day wear. It all depends on the company really as some are stricter than others, while some have a more casual approach.

Next of Kin

It is important before you leave on your cruise to inform family or friends where you are going. Leave details of where you can be contacted such as the company, the cruise and when and where you sail from so you may be called in an emergency.

Will I be Able to Wash My Clothes On Board?

It depends on the ship as to whether you will have access to a launderette with machines and driers. Some do not facilitate doing your own laundry but they do however have a laundry and dry cleaning service whereby you place your clothes in the bags provided and they will be collected, cleaned or washed then brought back to your cabin.

Do I Need Special Plug Adaptors?

Once again you need to check with your cruise company as some ships have regular UK plug sockets and some have European sockets.

Will the Ship Have a Telephone Service?

Yes some ships do have a service with telephones that are facilitated to make calls to shore in the rooms. Usually they are very expensive to use with high call tariffs. Most ships allow the use of mobile phones now so check with the cruise company.

Getting Online

Most cruise ships have internet cafes so that passengers can email or check their messages should they so wish. Some ships have cabins with wireless connection too. Bear in mind all these services will be charged for as extras so check the tariffs with the cruise company before you use these services.

Setting Off

So, the big day has arrived and you are on board your ship waiting to set sail. Below are a few facts you may wish to consider.

Find Your Bearings Once you are on the ship take a look around so that you know where toilet facilities, restaurants and cafes are, while checking on the safety aspect of things is paramount. Usually a safety drill similar to any you will have experienced at work will take place before you sail. This is for your own safety so it is best to pay attention so that if the worst should happen you are well informed.

Waving Goodbye Only passengers who are sailing on the cruise may board the ship. Most piers will accommodate friends or relatives that wish to wave goodbye so make sure your friends don’t climb on board as they may end up as stowaways! Setting sail is a great experience that you should not miss so ensure you are on deck to take in the atmosphere.

Do I Need Cash? What about All-Inclusive?

Generally you will not need cash as most modern cruise lines will give passengers a swipe card that doubles as a room key plus a card to add the cost of any extras, that you can pay for at the end of the holiday. Even all-inclusive trips can have added costs as not everything is always included. Check with the cruise company what is included in the deal. Such things as trips when docking in port or purchases from shops on board will not be covered.

If having a swipe card does not appeal to you then traveller’s checks are an alternative means of spending money. Alternatively when you get off the ship to sight see you can usually find a cash machine that facilitates drawing money directly from your account at home. Using a credit card is another way of paying for goods plus it is a safe alternative to carrying cash around.

I Feel Sea Sick!

Generally sea sickness does pass but if it does not it is handy to carry sea sickness pills to take in the event of feeling ill. It’s a good idea to have a small medical kit with you for emergencies however there is usually an on board doctor should your sickness get worse.

Other Facts to Think About

  1. It is not advisable to sail after the 24th week of pregnancy. Should you wish to do so you will need a doctor’s certificate to say you are ok to sail.
  2. Ensure you cruise provider is aware of any specific dietary requirements you have for instance whether you are vegetarian or allergic to any foods.
  3. Check babysitting services
  4. Some cruise lines do not allow passengers to take their own alcohol; on board so check before you sail
  5. If your flight is delayed you need to let your cruise know straight away as you may have to embark at an alternative port if they can’t delay sailing

As a footnote just remember cruises are not just for older people. Ships these days have all the modern facilities plus entertainment to suit all age groups. There are so many varied pursuits both facilitated on board and in the various ports of call that passengers will have the time of their lives when taking a cruise, whatever type it may be.
